The Human Rights Centre at the International University Audentes was opened on 12 November. The Centre is dedicated to better the understanding and protection of human rights.
At the opening the word was given to the Minister of Population, Urve Palo, who emphasised the role of human rights in the regulation of our behaviour and development of life quality. "Human Rights Declaration does not in itself guarantee automatically human rights. All the members of the society bear responsibility on the observance of human rights. This Centre helps to protect human rights in Estonian Society even better and more effectively," added Palo.
"The purpose of the Centre is to observe and analyse the situation of human rights and their protection in Estonia, where necessary to interfere in the discussions and promote human rights education and publications," explained the executive director of the Human Rights Centre, Marianne Meiorg.
The opening of the Centre also opened the Human Rights Week, which includes film weeks on 12-15 November and seminar "Sexual Minorities in Estonia - How Things Really Are" on 15 November.
More detailed information on the Human Rights Week is available on the website of the Centre.
